My name is Erica Baffelli and I am a Professor of Japanese Studies at The University of Manchester. Before arriving at Manchester in 2013 I worked at the University of Otago (New Zealand, 2007-2013) and I was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science at Hosei University (2005-2007). My research interests lie in religion in contemporary Japan, with a focus on religious minorities and marginalities, media, violence, emotions and temporalities.
From October to December 2021, I was a Japan Foundation Research Fellow at Toyo University. At Toyo University I collaborated with Professor Takahashi Norihito (Faculty of Sociology, Department of Global Diversity Studies) on a research project on religious minorities. In 2019 we received a grant from the UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) under the scheme AHRC-ESRC UK-Japan Connection Grant, for a project titled “Religion and Minority: lived religion, migration and marginalities in secular societies”. The aim of the grant was to develop a collaboration between researchers based at universities in the UK and Japan working on religious minorities from different methodological and disciplinary perspectives. The research groups included both senior scholars, early career and postgraduate researchers.
The main aim of my visiting fellowship at Toyo University, supported by the Japan Foundation, was to continue our collaboration to investigate the concepts of “minority” and “marginality” in a religious context. In particular, we are interested in how this labelling is constructed and we are investigating it by looking at different groups, including ethnico-religious minorities, new religions, marginalised groups, minorities inside minorities, and minorities inside mainstream organizations. During my two months in Japan, we organized weekly research meetings and worked together on a co-written article about our project (in Japanese) and a co-edited journal special issue on minority religions in the Japanese context including articles by other members of the research group focusing on different case studies (in English, to be published in 2023). We also co-wrote an article for a Japanese magazine and conducted field visits together, including a visit to the Vietnamese Daionji Temple in Saitama to observe the collaboration between Vietnamese, Taiwanese, and Japanese Buddhist groups through social activities for migrants in Japan.
During my stay in Japan, I also focused on a project investigating issues related to precarity, marginalities and religious welfare by looking at the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the social welfare activities of religious organizations relying on volunteers. In particular, I have conducted fieldwork on a Buddhist organization, Hitosaji no Kai (One Spoonful Association) operating since 2009. Hitosaji no Kai collaborates with other religious organizations, local communities and NPOs in supporting people in need, by providing food, medical advice and help with applications to welfare support schemes and by creating a connection with the people in need. Of course, the pandemic had a significant impact on these activities and presented new challenges. The organization and its volunteers adapted to the new situation and restrictions and new support activities emerged, for example to support immigrants stranded in Japan.
During my fellowship I have also conducted archival research for a project on the historiography of religion and urbanity investigating the role religion played in urbanization and how urbanity and religion influence each other. For this project, I focus on Tenri city as a small town in Nara prefecture established on April 1st 1954 as part of the “Great merger of the Shōwa Era” (shōwa no daigappei ). The landscape of the city is dominated by the headquarters of the “new” religion Tenrikyō founded in the late 19th century. Even before the establishment of Tenri city, the presence of Tenrikyō was significant in the area and an increasing number of followers had started relocating in the area since the early 20th century. For this project, I have started examining publications, both local newspapers and Tenrikyō’s own publications, from the 1950s discussing the merger and the creation of a “religious town”.
During my stay in Japan, I presented papers on my two projects at the annual conference of the American Academy of Religion (November 20-23, online) and at a workshop on urbanity and religion organized by the newly established research centre on “Urbanity and religion: Mutual formations”at the Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies (Max-Weber-Kolleg Erfurt) at Erfurt University (November 12, online). I also recorded a lecture for Toyo students on religion and media with Professors Takahashi Norihito and Okai Hirofumi. I have also had opportunities to discuss topics related to religion and sexual minorities by acting as discussant for a seminar hosted by Toyo University with Rev. Nakamura Yoshiki, who established the religion and LBGT network and by presenting my research at a seminar hosted by the Jodo Shu Research Institute of Buddhism with members of the newly established Jodo Shu LGBT and Equality Research Group. Finally, being in Japan allowed me to meet several colleagues working at Japanese universities to discuss our current research projects and to receive feedback on my projects.
This productive research period in Japan would have not been possible without the support of the Japan Foundation Japanese Studies Fellowship and of the Faculty of Sociology at Toyo University, which kindly agreed to host me. 私はエリカ?バフェッリと申します。私はイギリスのマンチェスター大学の日本研究専攻の教授を務めています。2013年にマンチェスターに来る以前は、オタゴ大学（ニュージーランド、2007-2013年）で働いていました。また、法政大学で日本学術振興会の外国人特別研究員（PD）だったこともあります（2005-2007年）。私の研究上の関心は現代日本の宗教にあり、とくに宗教的マイノリティやマージナリティ（周縁性）、メディア、暴力、感情、時間性などに焦点を当ててきました。
2021年10月から12月にかけて、私は篮球即时比分が受入機関となり篮球即时比分基金のリサーチフェローとなりました。篮球即时比分では、社会学部国際社会学科の高橋典史教授とともに宗教的マイノリティについての研究プロジェクトを共同で行いました。私たちは、イギリスの経済?社会研究会議（ESRC）および芸術?人文科学研究会議（AHRC）による日本とのあいだの学術交流の促進を目的とする研究助成計画のもとで、「宗教とマイノリティ：世俗社会における生きられた宗教、移民、マージナリティ」というタイトルのプロジェクトに対して、2019年にUKリサーチ?イノベーション（UKRI）からの助成を受けました。この研究助成のねらいは、イギリスと日本の大学を拠点にして、異なる方法論や研究分野の視点から宗教的マイノリティについての研究を進めることにより、研究者間の共同研究を発展させることでした。
篮球即时比分基金の助成を受けた篮球即时比分の訪問研究員としての私の主な目的は、宗教的コンテクストにおける「マイノリティ」と「マージナリティ」の概念を検討するための共同研究を進めることでした。とくに私たちは、こうしたラベリングがどのように構築されるのかという問題に関心があり、異なるタイプの宗教団体を見ることによってその問題を考察しました。そうした宗教団体には、民族的?宗教的マイノリティ、新宗教、周縁化された集団、マイノリティ集団内のマイノリティ、主流の組織内のマイノリティなどが含まれます。日本での2ヶ月間の滞在中、毎週定期にミーティングを行って、本プロジェクトについての共著記事（日本語）、私たちが共同で編集を担当し、日本のコンテクストにおけるマイノリティ宗教をテーマとする学術雑誌の特集号（英語、2023年に発行予定）などの作業を協力して進めました。その雑誌の特集号には、異なる事例研究を取り上げた共同研究の他のメンバーたちの論文も収録されます。また、私たちは、日本の雑誌向けのコラムも共著で執筆しており、ベトナム?台湾?日本の仏教者たちによる在日外国人支援を通じた交流を調査するため、埼玉県にあるベトナム仏教寺院「大恩寺」を現地訪問しました。
日本滞在中、私は、ボランティアたちによる宗教組織の社会福祉活動へのコロナ禍のパンデミックの影響を見ることによって、社会的な不安定さや周縁性、宗教的な社会福祉といった問題を調査する研究プロジェクトにも取り組みました。とくに私は、2009年に設立された社会慈業委員会「ひとさじの会」という仏教団体についてのフィールドワークを実施しました。ひとさじの会は、食料支援、医療相談?支援、福祉の支援事業への申請などの提供や苦しい状態にある人々との関係構築による困窮者たちへの支援において、他の宗教組織、地域社会、NPOなどと協働しています。もちろん、パンデミックはこうした活動に打撃を与えており、新たな挑戦をもたらしています。ひとさじの会とそのボランティアたちは、コロナ禍の新たな状況や制約を受け入れつつも、たとえば在日外国人たちへの支援のような新しい支援活動を生み出しました。
今回の滞在中、私は、都市化に宗教が果たした役割や都市性と宗教が相互にどのように影響し合っているのかについて研究する、宗教と都市性に関する歴史学の研究プロジェクトのための図書館調査も実施しました。このプロジェクトのために、私は、「昭和の大合併」の一部として1954年4月1日に発足した奈良県天理市に注目しました。天理市の景観は、19世の終わりに創設された「新」宗教の天理教の本部の大きな影響を受けています。天理市の発足以前でさえ、その地域における天理教の存在感は大きく、20世紀初頭以降、増加する信者たちはそのエリア内での移転を始めました。この研究プロジェクトのために私は、合併や「宗教都市」の創出についての議論があった1950年代からの新聞の地方紙と天理教の教団刊行物を考察し始めました。
日本滞在中、私は、アメリカ宗教学会年次大会（11月20-23日、オンライン開催）、ドイツのエアフルト大学「マックスウェーバーカレッジ」(Max-Weber-Kolleg Erfurt) に新たに設置された「都市性と宗教：相互編成」についての研究センターによって開催された都市性と宗教に関するワークショップ（11月12日、オンライン開催）において、自分の2つの研究プロジェクトについての研究発表を行いました。また、高橋典史先生と岡井宏文先生とともに、宗教とメディアに関する篮球即时比分の学生向けの講演も収録しました。そのほかにも、篮球即时比分で開かれた、「宗教とLGBTネットワーク」を創設した中村吉基牧師の講演会でコメンテータを務めて、宗教と性的マイノリティに関するトピックを議論する機会も得ました。浄土宗総合研究所が開催したセミナーにおいて、新たに設立された「浄土宗の平等思想LGBTQ」研究会の研究員たちとともに自分の研究報告を行いました。さらに、今回、日本に滞在できたことで、自分たちの現在の研究プロジェクトについて議論し、自身のプロジェクトに関するフィードバックをもらうために、日本の大学に勤めている研究者仲間たちと会うこともできました。
